What to see and do around Abel Tasman National Park

You’ve probably heard of Abel Tasman National Park, it’s one of the most beautiful spots in New Zealand. Here are our picks for what to see and to do in and around Abel Tasman. Perched at the top of the South Island, Abel Tasman National Park is famous for its stunning coastal vistas. Bursting with playful wildlife, jagged granite headlands and golden stretches of sand, there are so many ways to fully experience this coastal paradise.

Abel Tasman Coastal Track – walks for everyone

This idyllic hike, weaving through rich rainforests, around crescent-shaped coves and over view-commanding cliffs, is one of the best ways to explore the beauty of Abel Tasman National Park. Usually a 3-5 day journey, the track is easily accessible by water taxi or shuttle so you can enjoy a day walk amidst the park’s natural wonders and meet the cheeky wildlife who call the glittering shoreline home. Just remember to wear your swimsuit under your hiking attire, as a dip in the crystal-clear waters is a must to cool down along your way.

Boat Cruise – the best way to see the unbelievable coastline

The mix of physical activities and a relaxed beachy vibe is what makes Abel Tasman National Park special. A relaxing way to discover the park at its finest is to take to the sea on a scenic cruise. Sit back and catch some rays as the boat hugs the coastline bestowing magnificent vistas of granite cliffs spilling into the water. You may even be lucky enough to get up close to the local Fur Seals, Blue Penguins and dolphins as they play in the boat’s wake.

Marahau – the gateway to Abel Tasman

Framed by lush forest, grassy farmland and sparkling beaches, the charming settlement of Marahau is the gateway to Abel Tasman National Park. Give in to the famous Kiwi “go-with-the-flow” attitude and relax – dip your feet in the see, lay under a tree in the dappled sunlight or go for a short walk with the birdsong as your soundtrack.

Motueka – NZ’s sunshine capital

It’s the fertile soil that brings gardening enthusiasts and seasonal labourers alike to Sunny Motueka – it’s responsible for growing our ever-important hops and stone fruit – but it’s the artesian feel, eccentric food culture and convenience to Abel Tasman National Park that lures the holiday-makers. Visit a gallery, enjoy a coffee in one of the cafes or venture into Abel Tasman National Park for breath-taking hiking experiences.

Wildlife – up close and personal

Easily one of the top attractions in Abel Tasman Nation Park is the dynamic wildlife – the songs of the Tui and Korimako guide you through the trees; as the sea laps at your feet Blue Penguins dive for their dinner; lazy Fur Seals watch you hike the headlands; a playful dolphin may launch from the depths while you cruise the bays. From sea to sky and everywhere in-between you’ll find a surprising array of animals at every turn.
