Stunning views of Wanaka

Wanaka – Mountains, Magic and a Marvellous Lake

Perched on the shores of an expansive lake and nestled amongst grand mountains, Wanaka is one of New Zealand’s prettiest and most down to earth towns. It’s a great place to spend a little time, and there’s ample fun to had – both on the water and in the surrounding landscape. Here are a few MoaTrek suggestions for making your leisure time in Wanaka even more magical.

Unwind Beside the Lake

Wanaka is so beautiful that you don’t need to be doing anything in particular – just being there is often enough. A walkway meanders alongside the azure waters of the lake, and a stroll along the shore is a great way to soak up the stunning surrounds. If you fancy covering a bit more ground and like the breeze in your hair, hire a bike for a few hours and take a leisurely pedal on the dedicated bike trail.

Take to the water

Few modes of transport offer the access, relaxation and pleasure of paddling, so why not hire a kayak to explore the lake itself? Stable, high quality sea kayaks ensure you are appropriately equipped for fun on the water and it’s an activity suitable for everyone. You won’t need any prior experience and a high level of athleticism isn’t required. Gliding across the clear waters is a great way to soak up Wanaka’s very special ambience. If you are visiting during the warmer months, grab your swimwear and head for the beach. Directly adjacent to the Main Street is a delightful sandy beach which is wonderful for a refreshing dip. The bottom is sandy underfoot, and during summer time in particular, the water is a great temperature.

Restaurants and boutique shopping

Wanaka’s selection of quality restaurants, bars and shops – all located just metres from the lake – is a great place to spend an afternoon. If fresh food takes your fancy, you’ve come to the right place. Local restaurants serve a bounty of local produce along with world-class cuts of kiwi lamb and wild venison, and tables are often complete with magnificent views. And make sure to try a glass of local wine; Central Otago is known for delicious drops of Pinot Noir. Boutique stores offer a range of quality kiwi goods – check out the marvellous kiwi merino wool clothing or pick up some unique New Zealand greenstone during your visit.
